in washington obviously is over chuck hagel. that's going to be the big news. >> that's a fantastic transition. let me do that now. today president obama is expected to nominate former republican senator chuck hagel of nebraska as the next defense secretary. hagel, a decorated vietnam combat veteran, would be the first enlisted soldier to hold that cabinet post. his confirmation, however, is -- can you believe this -- shaping up to be a testy battle with the republicans. even though he is a republican. a number of republicans have suggested they will challenge their former colleague with tough questions on his foreign policy record. >> his views with regard to israel, for example, and iran and all the other positions that he's taken over the years will be, you know, i think very much a matter of discussion during the confirmation process. >> so you're not predicting smooth sailing for chuck hagel? >> i think it will be a lot of tough questions of senator hagel, but he'll be treated fairly by republican s in the senate. >> quite frankly, chuck hagel is out of the mainstream of thinking i believ
, one of the biggest challenges facing chuck hagel if, in fact, he is confirmed by the senate, is this budget battle. not necessarily here in the pentagon because, again, when the orders come down to cut this, cut that, cut this, the u.s. military has to oblige. they have to get it done. the biggest problem and this is where perhaps chuck hagel, you know, in terms of the kind of difficulties he's having now on capitol hill, may run in to some difficulty, is convincing members of congress up there on capitol hill who, in fact, take on their pet pork barrel projects, even though the pentagon has said we don't want those programs. we don't want those airplanes. congress, instead, votes -- goes ahead and votes for it because it means money and votes back home for many members of congress. so i think that ultimately will be the biggest challenge for secretary of defense chuck hagel if, in fact, he is confirmed, tamron. >> you took issue with what first read pointed out, which is the politics which is what i was starting out the conversation with you regarding, the politics of this,
the president's made in both of the taerms. he is controversial and stands for something. you know, chuck hagel's someone who i have known since 2007 when we were arguing against a troop increase in iraq and i can tell you on a personal level especially reading his book he cares what happens to the soldier or the marine on the ground embedded in combat and i think in afghanistan with green on blue killings, a question of projection of force and embedded with afghan troops, this is someone to say is this worth the sacrifice and there was a large debate in washington, d.c. prior to the increase of troops in afghanistan and hagel quietly was on the side that was against the president's plan of sending more troops and i think he looks right and this isn't just a shot, you know, lindsey graham calls it in your face sort of announceme announcement. it is in your face to neo-conservatives and dems and republicans because this is a realism argument that people like i believe or control knell schafer and nation building interventionists who think we should fight wars for democracy in the far end corners
on all things military, what was your -- what was your reaction to the nomination of chuck hagel? this comes, of course, against the back drop of susan rice and the cratering of her nomination. >> sure. the first thing that happened was this enormous and i think pretty unjustified republican reaction against him because if you look at chuck hagel on paper, he is the perfect gop candidate. you know, combat veteran, businessman, earned millions of dollars in the private sector, very successful washington career. was an organizer for ronald reagan. as senator, supported missile defense, defense increases, don't ask don't tell. i mean, right down the line very sort of doctrine supporter of defense. i was pretty shocked to see this huge outcry against him, and i think it goes back to things other than chuck hagel. >> yeah. just maybe. karen, lindsey graham saying this is an in your face nomination. he would be the most antagonistic secretary of defense. sharp words, which probably p r portends something more than just policy disagreements. >> true, although at this point lindsey grah
for defense secretary chuck hagel testified in his confirmation hearings on capitol hill. hagel was in the spotlight, but it was bush's war in iraq that was really on trial. conservativ conservative conservatives despise hegel, but they despise him because of the iraq war. they fear hegel because he's a warrior, a vietnam vet with two purple hearts who knows how war should be fought and should not be fought and how war should be the last resort. >> in my 12 years in the senate, my one guiding principle on every security decision i've made and every vote i cast was always this, simply this. is our policy worthy of our troops and their families and the sacrifices that we asked them to make. >>> i saw it from the bottom. i saw what happens. i saw the consequences and the suffering and the horror of war. >> hagel seen the suffering, the horror of war up close. president obama wants him to help lead our country out of war and into peace. and, today, conservatives attacked him for it. >> senator hagel's record is deeply troubling and out of the mainstream. >> you continue to hold, i b
was when he met with senator chuck schumer and schumer gave his blessing, endorsed hagel. i think the one issue that could give energy to the opposition was whether hagel was pro-israel and with schumer's blessing, schumer is a well-known supporter of israel. this was a signal to the pro-israel community, a lot of other people, leaders in that community have endorsed hagel. so i think that pushed him very close to nomination. i think it was very interesting that senator levin at the beginning of the hearing listed all of the controversial statements that senator hagel has made -- not all of them but a substantial list, and i think he was trying to signal hagel is going to have the chance to answer all of these and he, levin, expects him to answer them satisfactorily. i think it would be surprising if in the end hagel were not confirmed. >> is that what this hearing is going to be about? are we mostly going to hear questions about statements he's made about israel, about gays and so on? how much of it do you think will be it at the heart of what he's going to have to do which is l balance
